CP Blog Entry #4 Question: After viewing your data from the SY14-15, has your Change Project's "sense of urgency" been validated? Why or why not?
I have reviewed the end-of-year iReady scores for Reading and Mathematics for all grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade for the 2014-2015 school year. Our school ranked anywhere from third place in Fifth Grade Reading to eighth place in First Grade Math and Kindergarten Reading out of the ten elementary schools.
However, we were only on or above the end-of-year goals in Third Grade Reading and Kindergarten Math. All other grade levels and areas were below the expected goal for the end of the year.
Therefore, there is still a valid sense of urgency for my change project. Parents need to be aware of how their children are progressing in critical areas and the parents will need to be trained to better work with their children at home with those Reading and Mathematics skills.
Tess,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree when you say, "Parents need to be aware of how their children are progressing in critical areas and the parents will need to be trained to better work with their children at home with those Reading and Mathematics skills."
Parents are their children's first teachers. We truly need them to understand the important role they play in their child's education. It should be a partnership. Hopefully your project will help our school with that!
The need of urgency is important and I see that same trend with our school too. Some of the scores are inconsistent and vary between grade levels. The i-ready seems to be beneficial to the primary grade levels while the intermediate grade levels seem to have many areas of concerns. The parents do need to realize the importance of this change and how important it is to support their child's education.
ReplyDeleteDo and will your parents and students actively check their progress in FOCUS and if available, School Portal? I wondered how that might translate into their own use of the data and processing it visually? Interesting to see if it is a viable option as I know some of the middle schools have students check their FOCUS grades weekly.
ReplyDeleteI assume the parents who are the most involved will be checking FOCUS on a regular basis.
